The restoration and functional recovery of Torre San Felice was carried out as part of the Interreg V/A Greece – Italy 2014/2020 Program “CoHeN – Coastal Heritage Network,” coordinated by the Puglia Region – Department of Tourism, Cultural Economy and Territorial Development and the DICATECh department of the Polytechnic University of Bari. The goal of the restoration and functional recovery of the towers on the Puglia coast was to preserve and repurpose them.
The 16th-century tower’s restoration involved two main interventions: first, the restoration of its image through the surface restoration of the wall facing; second, the analysis of what was deemed incongruous, to determine which portions of the subsequent modifications to the structure should be retained.
Scope of intervention | European Programme Interreg V/A Greece – Italy 2014/2020 “CoHeN – COASTAL HERITAGE NETWORK”
Services | Survey, Definitive and Executive Design, Construction Management Project
Cost | €406,000.00
Working Group | Architect Ezio Melchiorre (team leader), Engineer Gaetano Albino, Architect Nicoletta De Rosa
The tower itself represents a starting point for territorial transformation, making it part of and a destination for a broader coastal, landscape, and tourist itinerary. From the perspective of this potential redevelopment, the coastal towers’ ability to define a dense system of visual perception and physical proximity is highlighted; the towers are positioned along the coast approximately 5 km apart, equivalent to the average walking distance of one hour. At the territorial scale, the Tower’s original state is thus restored, preserving it as a local landmark. At the building scale, redevelopment of the tower’s exterior spaces and rooms is planned, with a preliminary design of the internal systems.
